Course Overview
How do our government and economy work? How do they affect me?
Grade 9 Social Studies focuses on citizenship, identity and quality of life. Students will examine the relationships between Canada’s political and legislative processes, and they’ll examine the impact of these processes on governance, rights, citizenship and identity. Students will also explore issues of economics and their impact on quality of life, citizenship and identity in Canada and the United States.
Social Studies 9 studies the organization of government in Canada. This includes a look at how we elect or appoint members of government to the various branches, and what their responsibilities are as members of government. A big part of government is the creation of laws to maintain a just society, so we will learn about the Youth Criminal Justice Act, as well as laws that impact immigration. The government also plays a role in economics, so we will compare Canada’s economy to the United States, as well as exploring what our role is as consumers and how this impacts quality of life.
Social Studies provides opportunities for students to develop the attitudes, skills and knowledge that will encourage them to become engaged, informed and responsible citizens. The program emphasizes the importance of diversity as it reflects multiple perspectives, that contribute to Canada’s evolving society. Social Studies is the study of people in relation to each other and their world. It is an issues-focused and inquiry-based interdisciplinary subject that draws upon history, geography, ecology, economics, law, philosophy, political science and other social science disciplines. This course helps students develop their sense of self and community, encouraging them to affirm their place as citizens in an inclusive, democratic society.
